What it is
CrewAI is an open-source (MIT) Python framework for orchestrating crews: teams of agents with a role, a goal and tools that collaborate on a task, plus flows for step-by-step control over execution. It doesn't depend on LangChain. The company also offers a platform to build, deploy and govern agents, with a visual editor that exports to Python.
How to use it
- Define agents with a role, a goal and a backstory, and give them tools.
- Chain tasks so a team of agents researches, writes and reviews.
- Control the process with event-driven flows when you need deterministic steps.
- Start a project with the CLI and run it locally on the model of your choice.
- Deploy to their platform for tracing, access control and human approvals.
What it's good for
- A data team building a crew that researches companies and produces prospecting reports.
- A food company replacing RPA support bots with agents that classify and answer tickets.
- A Python developer prototyping a multi-agent system without designing a graph from scratch.
Pros
- MIT-licensed open source with no LangChain dependency
- Readable role-and-task model for multi-agent systems
- CLI to create, test and deploy projects
- Free platform plan with a visual editor and 50 executions a month
Cons
- Python only: there's no official TypeScript version
- Autonomous agents can be unpredictable without flows and solid testing
- SSO, governance and flexible deployment sit in the quote-based Enterprise plan
