What it is
Render is a platform for deploying almost any application without managing servers: web services, APIs, background workers, cron jobs, managed Postgres and a Redis-compatible cache. Connect a repo or a Docker image and it redeploys on every change. It sits between a frontend host and a big cloud like AWS, with flat per-instance pricing.
How to use it
- Deploy a web service or API in Node, Python, Ruby, Go or Docker straight from your repo.
- Spin up managed Postgres with backups, right next to your app.
- Run workers and cron jobs for queues, emails and scheduled tasks.
- Define infrastructure in a file (Blueprints) and reuse it across projects.
- Review every pull request in its own preview environment.
What it's good for
- A startup running its Python API, Postgres database and nightly jobs in one place.
- A team leaving Heroku that wants something similar with clearer pricing.
- A developer self-hosting n8n or a bot on a small instance with a persistent disk.
Pros
- Long-running services, workers and cron jobs, not just functions
- Managed Postgres and Redis-compatible cache on the same platform
- Flat per-instance pricing that's easier to forecast than per-request billing
- Infrastructure as code with Blueprints
Cons
- Free instances spin down after 15 minutes idle and take a while to wake up
- No Latin American region; the closest ones are in the US
- Free Postgres databases expire after 30 days
