Zapier and Make charge per task or credit, and your data runs through their cloud. These tools can run on your own server instead: you pay for infrastructure rather than every run, and your data stays with you.
Self-hosting has a cost that never shows up on an invoice: someone has to install, update, back up and secure the server. If nobody on your team can do that, every tool here also has a cloud version.
Check the license, too. Not all of them are open source in the strict sense: n8n uses a “fair-code” license, and Dify restricts offering it as a service.
n8nThe Community edition is free to self-host with no execution limit. It mixes visual nodes with JavaScript or Python code and ships with nodes for AI agents.
ActivepiecesMIT-licensed core with a Zapier-style editor built for non-technical teams. The interface is available in Spanish, and it connects 760+ apps.
DifyBuilt for AI workflows: chatbots, agents and RAG on a visual canvas, published as an API or web chat. It runs with Docker, but its license bars offering it as a multi-tenant service without permission.
FlowiseBuild agents and RAG chatbots by dragging nodes; every flow becomes an API or a chat widget. Install it with npm or Docker, and run local models like Ollama if you need to.
AirbyteIf what you automate is copying data from your apps into a data warehouse or a vector database, Airbyte is built for that. The Community edition is free to self-host, though it means running Kubernetes.
