What it is
Snowflake is a cloud data platform where companies store and analyze large volumes of data with SQL. It separates storage from compute: each team runs its own virtual warehouse without slowing others down, and you pay only while it runs. It works on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud and lets you share live data with other organizations without copying it.
How to use it
- Load data from apps, databases and files, and query it with SQL.
- Give each team its own virtual warehouse that suspends and resumes automatically.
- Share data with customers or partners without copies, or get datasets from its Marketplace.
- Apply AI to your data with Cortex: summaries, classification and natural-language questions.
- Code in Python with Snowpark and publish internal apps with Streamlit.
What it's good for
- A pharmacy chain combining sales, inventory and loyalty data to analyze each store.
- A fintech sharing data with partners instead of emailing files.
- A data team running AI models on its tables without moving data off the platform.
Pros
- Storage and compute are separate, so each workload scales on its own
- Runs on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud
- Share data across organizations without making copies
- 30-day trial with US$400 in credits
Cons
- Costs climb fast if warehouses stay on or are oversized
- Credit prices vary by edition, cloud and region, which makes forecasting hard
- Built for enterprises; overkill for small data volumes
